Frequently Asked Questions
Early kidney disease often has no symptoms. Warning signs may include changes in urination (frequency, color, foaming), fatigue, swelling in legs/ankles/face, persistent itching, nausea, metallic taste, or difficulty concentrating. High-risk individuals (diabetes, hypertension, family history) should have regular kidney function screening.
Dialysis is a treatment that filters waste and excess fluid from blood when kidneys can't function adequately. It's typically needed when kidney function drops below 10-15% (Stage 5 CKD). Hemodialysis uses a machine, while peritoneal dialysis uses the abdominal lining. Your nephrologist will help determine the best option.
Many cases can be prevented or progression slowed through: controlling blood pressure and diabetes, maintaining healthy weight, not smoking, limiting salt and processed foods, staying hydrated, avoiding nephrotoxic medications, and regular health screenings for high-risk individuals.
